"Pinkman: Doire-an-droichid = Oakwood of the bridge. Bridges were usually erected at the place of the old fords, principally because of the existing roadways, but, also, because these places were suitable for the kinds of bridges erected in early times. They generally consisted of planks laid from brink to brink. Sometimes they were made of strong hurdles supported on piles. Stone bridges were a later development – not of any importance, probably, before the Anglo-Norman invasion. "
