"Pinkman: Gort-Leitreach = Field of the wet hillside. Leitir, genitive Leitre and Leitreach, means the side of a hill, a wet or spewy hillside (O’Donovan). In 1861 there were 930 Catholic families in the parish with a Catholic population of 4,834. Now in 1941, the population is exactly half that figure! In the same year, 1861, there were 69 Protestant families and a population of 329."
