Explanatory note

  • Gaeilge

    the town of Póilín

Póilín — foirm dhíspeagtha den ainm pearsanta Pól, b'fhéidir, nó leagan gaelaithe den sloinne Paulin (féach A Dictionary of British Surnames (4th impr.). London. pp.244, 226). Tá an sloinne seo, agus malairtí foirme a mheastar a bhaineann leis, le fáil i measc na Sean-Ghall sa 13ú haois, m.sh.: ‘Robt. Paulin’ (Hore i p.15); ‘Richard Polyn [Carlow]’ (CJR Edw.II 228); ‘Will. Peulyn’ (CJR Edw.I p.66); ‘Will Pollan’ (CPR Edw.I ii p.485); agus ‘Bartholomew Palang’ (COD 1293–1301 p.93). (Féach Logainmneacha na hÉireann IV: Townland Names of Co. Wexford, vol. II, PULLINGTOWN) (CÓC)

Póilín — possibly from the personal name Pól, or a gaelicised form of the surname Paulin (see A Dictionary of British Surnames (4th impr.). London. pp.244, 226). This surname, and probable variants thereof, is attested among the Anglo-Normans in Ireland the thirteenth century, e.g. ‘Robt. Paulin’ (Hore i p.15); ‘Richard Polyn [Carlow]’ (CJR Edw.II 228); ‘Will. Peulyn’ (CJR Edw.I p.66); ‘Will Pollan’ (CPR Edw.I ii p.485); and ‘Bartholomew Palang’ (COD 1293–1301 p.93).
