Explanatory note
- Gaeilge
Ón bhfocal teamhair (‘high place') don ainm seo, is dócha. Scríobhann Nollaig Ó Muraíle sa leabhar The Kingship and Landscape of Tara (Four Courts, 2005): 'Evidence from seventeenth-century sources strongly suggest the genitive, or adjectival, name-form Teamhrach -- cf. pollach, portach. By the early nineteenth century this had developed ... from a diphthongal to a /u:/ sound, rendered 'tiúrach' in the O[rdnance] S[urvey] Namebook, together with a misleading interpretation [i.e., 'abounding in yews']. One may also note the presence in the townland of the microtoponym Tower Hill, which almost certainly reflects the original Irish name Teamhair, rather than the English word tower.' (lch. 469)
- English
This name is from the word teamhair (‘high place'). Nollaig Ó Muraíle writes, in The Kingship and Landscape of Tara (Four Courts, 2005): 'Evidence from seventeenth-century sources strongly suggest the genitive, or adjectival, name-form Teamhrach -- cf. pollach, portach. By the early nineteenth century this had developed ... from a diphthongal to a /u:/ sound, rendered 'tiúrach' in the O[rdnance] S[urvey] Namebook, together with a misleading interpretation [i.e., 'abounding in yews']. One may also note the presence in the townland of the microtoponym Tower Hill, which almost certainly reflects the original Irish name Teamhair, rather than the English word tower.' (p. 469)
