"The townland is supposed to have its name from a remarkable spring which is situated near the centre of the townland and south bank of the Castlebar River, nearly opposite to Millbrook House ruins, and about 8 chains west of bleach mill ruins. In the south angle of this townland stands a house with a large garden called Springfield House" [Desc. Rem.];
