    the shrine
Iasacht ón Laidin scrinium ‘shrine’ atá sa logainm seo. Séard a bhí sa scrín ó cheart ná soitheach do thaisí de chuid Naomh Colm Cille. Tá cur síos ag Edel Bhreatnach ar fhianaise luath an logainm in aiste léi a foilsíodh in Ríocht na Midhe (1996), ina dtugann sí le fios gurb é an tagairt is sine d’eaglais na Scríne ná ‘Scrín Coluim Cille dargain’ faoin mbliain 976 sna hannála ar a dtugtar Chronicon Scotorum. Measann sí gur ag trácht atá Annála Uladh, bliain 878, ar an scrín féin a tugadh go hÉirinn ó Oileán Í: ‘Scrín Coluim Cille 7 a minna olchena du tiachtain dochum nErenn for teicheadh ria Gallaibh’. Mar seo atá an abairt dheireanach aistrithe go Béarla ag an bhfear eagair, Gearóid Mac Niocaill: ‘the Shrine of Colum Cille and his other halidoms [i.e. venerated objects] arrived in Ireland, having been taken in flight to escape the foreigners’.
Bhí cuimhne fós ar an seanainm a bhí ar chnoc na Scríne timpeall na bliana 1100, tráth ar scríobhadh an ghluais chomhaimseartha seo i Leabhar na hUidhre: ‘Achall .i. tulach hi fil Scrín Choluim Cille indiu’. Tá an t-ainm réamhráite caomhnaithe i logainmneacha eile mar, Bealach Achaille i gCo. Thiobraid Árann agus Acaill i gCo. Mhaigh Eo. Níl sanasaíocht an logainm soiléir
