An Bhóinn atá ar theorainn thuaidh an bhaile fearainn seo agus ar an teorainn thoir tá abhainn ar a dtugtar Knightsbrook River ar léarscáileanna na Suirbhéireachta Ordanáis agus ar an léarscáil a rinne William Larkin den chontae roimhe sin a foilsíodh sa bhliain 1812. Is é ‘the river, the lands of Iffernock(e)’ an t-ainm atá sa Civil Survey (1654). Is é an t-ainm a thugtar ar an abhainn úd ar léarscáil an Down Survey ná ‘Diuels brooke’ / ‘Diuells brook’ (1657c). Tá cuntas sa leabhar Cill i logainmneacha Co. Thiobraid Árann ar na háiteanna éagsúla a bhfuil an t-ainm sin orthu in Éirinn, nó ainmneacha eile a shíolraigh ón mbunfhocal céanna, áiteanna mar Effernagh i gCo. Mhuineacháin, Effernagh River / Sruthán na hIfreannaí i gCo. Dhún na nGall, Effrinagh le hais Effrinagh Lough i gCo. Liatroma, Effernoge i gCo. Loch Garman mar aon leis an dara heilimint sa logainm Cill Eithirneach / Kilheffernan i gContae Thiobraid Árann. Cois abhann nó locha atá a lán de na logainmneacha úd agus sainainm ar abhainn, nó ar loch, nó ar ghné eile uisce is ea a thuilleadh díobh. Dealraíonn sé gur fréamhaithe ón bhfocal ifern, ‘hell’ (Dictionary of the Irish Language) iad na focail úd atá caomhnaithe i logainmneacha. Ní foláir nó samhlaíodh rud éigin ‘ifreannaí’ le suíomh na n-ainmneacha seo trí chéile agus go raibh baint aige le (doimhneacht?) uisce
