Explanatory note

Ní léir brí c(h)ú anseo. Cé go bhfuil sé le fáil sa Nua-Ghaeilge mar ghinideach uatha de cú, 'hound', is í an fhoirm is luaithe, con, a mbeifí ag súil leis i logainmneacha. D'fhéadfadh sé gur forbairt as conga, 'narrow neck of land', atá ann, faoi mar atá le fáil san ainm Béal Cú (< Béal Conga) i gContae Fhear Manach; níl aon fhianaise stairiúil ar an bhforbairt conga > cú san ainm idir chamáin anseo, áfach - English

The meaning of c(h)ú is unclear here. While it exists in the later language as a genitive singular form of cú, 'hound', the earlier form, which would be expected to occur in placenames, is con. The second element could represent a development of conga, 'narrow neck of land', as in the case of Béal Cú (< Béal Conga) in County Fermanagh; however, we have no historical evidence for the development conga > cú in the present name
