the hill of the mound of the twigs
Is é Cnoc (an) Dumha (M(h)ó(i)r) an t-ainm ó cheart (cf. 1619 'Knockdowmory', Calendar of Patent Rolls; 'Knockdoemore', Inquisitiones), á idirdhealú seo ar Cnoc an Dumha Beag/Bhig sa pharóiste céanna (.i. an baile fearainn darb ainm Béarla Knockadoo an lae inniu; cf. 1660c 'Knockadowe or Knockdowe', Book of Survey and Distribution). Thit an cáilitheoir mór as úsáid idir an 17ú agus an 19ú haois agus cuireadh an ginideach cáilíochta brosna leis ina ionad - English
the hill of the mound of the twigs
Cnoc (an) Dumha (M(h)ó(i)r), 'the hill of the mound (big); the hill of the big mound', is the original name (cf. 1619 'Knockdowmory', Calendar of Patent Rolls; 'Knockdoemore', Inquisitiones), distinguishing this place from Cnoc an Dumha Beag/Bhig in the same parish (i.e., the townland now called in English Knockadoo; cf. 1660c 'Knockadowe or Knockdowe', Book of Survey and Distribution). The adjective mór fell out of use between the 17th and 19th centuries and the attributive genitive brosna, 'of kindling, of twigs' was attached in its place
