Explanatory note
- Gaeilge
Inis Crabhann
De réir dealraimh tharla athdheighilt ar leagan de Eiscir Abhann (bunleagan an logainm seo), .i. *in Eiscir Abhann go *in Eis C(i)rabhann, agus tharla athanailís ina dhiaidh go Inis (S)Cr(e)abhann > Inis Crabhann. Bhí an leagan seo ann ón 16ú aois ar aghaidh ar a laghad. Mhair Eiscir Abhann mar leagan malartach ar feadh tréimhse, ach thit sé in éag i ndeireadh na dála. Níl fianaise ar bith ann go raibh a leithéid de Inis Eiscir Abhann ann mar leagan Gaeilge den logainm seo fhad is a bhí an Ghaeilge fós beo mar theanga an phobail anseo.
- English
Inis Crabhann
This place-name seems to be the result of the re-segmentation of a version of Eiscir Abhann ‘esker of (at) the river’, namely *in Eiscir Abhann, in speech to *in Eis C(i)rabhann, which resultantly underwent re-analysis to Inis (S)Cr(e)abhann > Inis Crabhann. This version of the name was in use from the 16th century onwards at least. Eiscir Abhann survived as an alternative form for a time before it fell out of use. There is no evidence to suggest that Inis Eiscir Abhann was ever the Irish version of this place-name as long as Irish was the vernacular here.

[Inishcrone]
As for its date of erection, little can be said beyond conjecture. It is supposed to have been founded by the O'Dowds, the leading chieftains of this part of the country, in whose possession it remained untill [sic] a person named Joice took the castle and put his family & followers to the sword, except one sow who was concealed by a nurse. Joice occupied it during his life, and at his death bequeathed it to his daughter, married to a person named Ormsby, said to be the last inhabitant of the castle, and who was dispossessed by Cromwell in 1658. The soldiers having attacked the castle, Ormsby flew to his horse, but looking towards the castle he observed a man coming out having a book under his arm: Ormsby in the face of danger reined about his horse and demanded the book which was refused. He drew his dagger, stabbed the person and took the book. The soldiers being about to close on him, he remounted, leapt down a steep precipace [sic] and escaped unhurt.
