    Ballydoogan (par. St John’s)

Baile Uí DhúgáinÓ Dúgáin’s townland” [Baile fearainn Uí Dhúgáin]

De réir Woulfe i Sloinnte Gaedheal is Gall (SGG), bhí roinnt clann éagsúil sa tír a raibh an sloinne ‘Ó Dubhagáin’ acu. Deirtear faoi cheann acu, ‘Ó Dubhagáin of Tirawley...anciently seated in the parish of Kilmore-Moy, to the north-west of Ballina’, go raibh siad ‘of the same stock as the MacFirbises’, teaghlach iomráiteach léinn de bhunadh Shligigh (SGG lg.509). Tá an ráiteas úd faoin gcomhshinsearacht deimhnithe in The Genealogies, Tribes, and Customs of Hy-Fiachrach (TChyF) a chuir Seán Ó Donnabháin in eagar: ‘O’Lachtna ... agus as díb Ui Dubhagain, agus Clann Fhirbhisigh’ (TChyF p.10). Chomh maith leis sin, in Annála na gCeithre Máistrí faighimid scéala báis ‘O dubhagain, Senchaidh, .i. Seaan mac Corbmaic’, “Ó Dúgáin, historian, i.e. Seán mac Cormaic”, (1440; ÁRE iv p.922) i measc tagairtí do dhaoine ó áiteanna éagsúla i Sligeach an lae inniu. Is leor an sampla seo den fhianaise atá luaite againn le léiriú cé chomh coitianta is a bhí an sloinne Ó Dúgáin sa chontae seo. Tar éis dúinn an fhianaise sin a mheas, mar aon le mianach ginearálta na dtagairtí logainmníochta, fágann sé gur féidir linn a bheith nach mór cinnte go bhfuil an logainm galldaithe seo ag teacht le ‘Baile ui Dhúgain’ (17) agus ‘Baile Ui Dhúbhgain’ (18) mar atá ag Ó Donnabháin, nó Baile Uí Dhúgáin i litriú caighdeánach an lae inniu.

    Ballydoogan (par. St John’s)

    Baile Uí DhúgáinÓ Dúgáin’s town(land)”

According to Woulfe in Sloinnte Gaedheal is Gall (SGG), there were a number of different septs in the country who bore the surname ‘Ó Dubhagáin’. One such sept, ‘Ó Dubhagáin of Tirawley … anciently seated in the parish of Kilmore-Moy, to the north-west of Ballina’, were ‘of the same stock as the MacFirbises’, a well known learned family from Sligo (SGG p.509). This observation of common ancestry is confirmed in the text of The Genealogies, Tribes, and Customs of Hy-Fiachrach (TChyF) edited by John O’Donovan: ‘O’Lachtna ... agus as díb Ui Dubhagain, agus Clann Fhirbhisigh’ (TChyF p.10), “Ó Lachtna ... and from them the Ó Dúgáin and the clan of the Mac Firbhisigh”. Moreover, in the Annals of the Four Masters we find the obit of ‘O dubhagain, Senchaidh, .i. Seaan mac Corbmaic’, “Ó Dúgáin, historian, i.e. Seán mac Cormaic”, (1440; ÁRE iv p.922) among references to persons from various parts of modern-day Sligo. This sample of evidence suffices to demonstrate the strong presence of the surname Ó Dúgáin in this county; considered together with the general nature of the toponymic references, it leaves little doubt but that this anglicised place-name corresponds to ‘Baile ui Dhúgain’ (17) and ‘Baile Ui Dhúbhgain’ (18) as given by O’Donovan, or Baile Uí Dhúgáin in standard modern orthography.
