variant form of ineasclann

Fionasclainn here is a variant form of Ineasclann, which occurs as a simplex townland name Inisclan [Ineasclann] in Tyrone (x2), and as a qualifying element in the townland names Clooninisklin/Cluain Ineasclainn in Roscommon; Dromiskin/Droim Ineasclainn in Louth; and Druminisclin/Droim Ineasclainn and Druminiskill/Droim Ineasclainn in Cavan.

As Joyce noted, ‘inesclund is explained as “sribh luath no tren,” “a swift or strong stream’ in Cormac’s Glossary’ (Origin and History of Irish Names of Places II (1883) p.406); this meaning is also given in eDIL s.v. inescland. However, in his discussion of the County Louth placename Dromiskin/Droim Ineasclainn (Dinnseanchas 5 (1972–3) p.61), Éamon de hÓir argued that this traditional explanation of Ineasclann is doubtful given the absence of any ‘fast or strong stream’ in many of the townlands in whose names it occurs. On the other hand, de hÓir drew attention to the fact that bog or peatland can or could be found in all of the examples listed. This latter characteristic is in keeping with Dónall Mac Giolla Easpaig’s linguistic analysis of the word as deriving from ‘*Eni-Sesko-Landa ‘land in the sedges’ ... Ineasclann ‘sedge-land’’ (Études celtiques XVIII (1981) p.156).

A variant form of Ineasclann with a prosthetic (non-original) f- (cf. fuinneog “window” < Old Irish uinneoc) occurs in a number of western counties. It occurs in anglicised form as Finnisglin in Galway and Finisklin and Finiskil in Leitrim (see also Finisclin in Roscommon). It is also found in the two townlands in County Sligo named Finisklin, one in the parish of St John’s and one in Drumrat. The Irish version of this variant form is set down as Fionasclainn in the relevant placenames orders and draft placenames orders for the counties (see www.logainm.ie/en/ord/). This version contains a non-palatal (‘broad’) first -n-, although a version such as *Fineasclainn reflecting the historical palatal (‘slender’) -n- in OIr. inescland would also be valid. Note that there is absolutely no evidence that the first part of the word is derived from the adjective fionn (in -nn) “white, bright”.
