Explanatory note
- Gaeilge
plain of (the) quagmire
Ba í Maigh Créithir bunfhoirm an logainm seo (féach 1359 'Moycrehir'); faoin 17ú haois bhí an baile fearainn seo foroinnte ina dhá chuid (féach 1657 'both Mackryeryes'; 1659 'Muctetybeg, Mueretymore') agus is cosúil gur rinneadh Maigh Créithre den ainm faoi mar a bheadh leagan iolra.
Cf. Ó Dónaill s.vv. créithir agus criathar 3(b). - English
plain of (the) quagmire
The original form of this placename was Maigh Créithir (see 1359 'Moycrehir'); by the 17th century the townland had been subdivided into two parts (see 1657 'both Mackryeryes'; 1659 'Muctetybeg, Mueretymore') and it appears that the Irish name became Maigh Créithre as if it were a plural form.
Cf. Ó Dónaill s.vv. créithir and criathar 3(b).
