Explanatory note
- Gaeilge
the town of the Uaithnigh
Uaithnigh (iol.
- English
the town of the Uaithnigh
Uaithnigh (pl. < Uaithneach) — from the sept-name Uaithne.
Cf. the name of the barony Uaithne agus Ara/Owney and Ara in this county and of the barony Uaithne Beag/Owneybeg in Co. Limerick.
It would seem that Baile na nUaithneach became ** ***Baile na Múna (Móna), 'the town of the bogland', in speech.
