English green, grey

Explanatory note

  • Gaeilge

    the green height
Ba í 'Gryersland' (1654) bunfhoirm an logainm seo, bunaithe ar an sloinne Greer. Rinneadh Greensland den ainm trí chomhshamhlú -r-n > -n-n.
D'fhéadfadh sé gur leathaistriúchán déanach ar an Greensland seo atá san ainm Gaeilge a bhí in úsáid sa 19ú haois (.i. An tArd Glas).

  • English

    the green height
The original form of this placename was 'Gryersland' (1654), from the surname Greer. The name developed to Greensland through assimilation (-r-n > -n-n).
It is possible that the Irish name in use in the 19th century (i.e., An tArd Glas, 'the green height'), represents a half-translation of this Greensland.
