Explanatory note

  • Gaeilge

Is aistriúchán í an fhoirm Ghaeilge.
Barr na Coille, 'the top of the wood', b'fhéidir, an seanainm atá le feiscint in iontrálacha 1654 agus 1659. Bhí muilte iarainn anseo: féach an t-ainm Béarla 1819 'Forgelands', 1841 'Old Forge lands'; agus an mionainm Gaeilge Muileann an Iarainn, 'the mill of the iron', san Ainmleabhar (1841) agus in Place-Names of Decies, 60.

  • English

Is aistriúchán í an fhoirm Ghaeilge.
The former name found in entries 1654 and 1659 is perhaps Barr na Coille, 'the top of the wood'. There were ironworks here: see the English name 1819 'Forgelands', 1841 'Old Forge lands'; and the Irish minor name Muileann an Iarainn, 'the mill of the iron', in the Namebook (1841) and in Place-Names of Decies, 60.
