Explanatory note
- Gaeilge
An t-ainm Gaeilge a bhí ag muintir na háite ar an mbaile seo, An Blaic, tá sé bunaithe ar chéad mhír an ainm Bhéarla, Blacklion (ainm tábhairne ó cheart, is cosúil). Féach 'Seanchas Ghleann Ghaibhle' in Béaloideas IV, iv (1934)
- English
The name local Irish speakers had for this town, An Blaic, was based on the first element of the English name Blacklion (which appears to have originally been the name of a tavern). See 'Seanchas Ghleann Ghaibhle' in Béaloideas IV, iv (1934)

You may observe that monasteries and castles have given origin to most ancient Irish villages, just as Public houses are now beginning to give rise and names to several, as Black Lion, Red Lion, Man of War, Fox and Goose, all named from the signs over the Public houses that gave origin to these villages! Piety and whiskey producing the same effects!

an Blaic (< Black), the village of Blacklion ... S[eán Éamuinn Ruairí]M[hagUidhir] never heard Blacklion called "Largy" or "an Leargaidh". He states that Largy (an Leargain in Irish) is the name of the district lying along the southern shore of Upper Lough Macnean.
