Explanatory note

  • Gaeilge

the river meadow of Mac Uidhir; the river meadow of the son of Odhar
Ní léir cé acu an sloinne Mac Uidhir nó ainm athartha (iad araon bunaithe ar an ainm pearsanta Odhar, gin. Uidhir) atá anseo.
Tá rian den -dh- (a d'fhuaimnítí mar /ð/ sa Ghaeilge anuas go dtí deireadh an 13ú haois nó mar sin) le feiscint sna foirmeacha stairiúla is luaithe dá bhfuil againn, e.g. 'Inchemacwythyr' (as foinse eaglasta Laidine, 1302–6); díol spéise is ea go bhfuil dhá fhorbairt ar leith le sonrú san fhianaise ina dhiaidh sin, mar atá, foirmeacha Béarlaithe le -dd- (e.g. 'Inchemacudder' in 1557, 'Inshmacodder' in 1578, etc.) chomh maith le foirmeacha a thaispeánann an t-athrú fuaime a tháinig ar an ainm sa Ghaeilge (e.g. 'Inchmaquyer' in 1551, 'Inchemaquier or Inchequier' in 1612, etc.)

  • English

the river meadow of Mac Uidhir; the river meadow of the son of Odhar
It is not clear whether this placename contains the surname Mac Uidhir or a patronymic (both being based on the personal name Odhar, gen. Uidhir).
The earliest historical forms, e.g. 'Inchemacwythyr' (from an ecclesiastical source in Latin, 1302–6), reflect Irish -dh- (pronounced as /ð/ until the late 13th century); it is interesting to note that two distinct developments can be traced in the subsequent evidence, viz., anglicised forms in -dd- (e.g. 'Inchemacudder' in 1557, 'Inshmacodder' in 1578, etc.) as well as forms which reflect the sound change in Irish (e.g. 'Inchmaquyer' in 1551, 'Inchemaquier or Inchequier' in 1612, etc.)
