Ó Floinn -- surname associated with this ecclesiastical establishment in the 13th century; Eas Mac nEirc, 'the waterfall of the sons of Earc [personal name]', was the former name. The first edition of the Ordnance Survey map (six inches to one mile) shows a waterfall on the River Boyle at this location (anno 1837)

"Now, about an English mile (six furlongs?) up the river Búill there are the ruins of a monastic establishment which took from a cataract lying opposite it, the name of Eas Uí Fhloinn, i.e. O'Flyn's Cataract. This is the real Eas mac n-Erc of the old writers..." [OD]
