Explanatory note

  • Gaeilge

Is aistriúchán é Scabhat na mBodach atá bunaithe ar an eolas seo a leanas: Níl pinniúr anseo, agus dá bharr glactar leis go bhfuil scabhat idir chamáin anseo. Tá buffer le fáil i mBéarla na hÉireann leis an bhrí (1) ‘boxer’ (2) ‘country-man’ (féach Slanguage, ag Bernard Share, 1997, s.n. Buffer, Buff). Tá buffer fianaithe i Sasana fosta leis an bhrí ‘a foolish person, dolt, fool, buffoon’ nó ‘chap, fellow’ (féach English Dialect Dictionary). Tá ‘bodach’ ar aonghuth le han-chuid de na bríonna seo thuas. Is díol spéise go raibh áit eile ann darb ainm Buffers Alley gar do Bhun Clóidí (fuarthas an t-eolas faoi seo ón Chanónach Séamas de Vál, Bun Clóidí). (CÓC)

  • English

Scabhat na mBodach is a translation based on the following information: There is no handball Alley here, and therefore one presumes that it is a roadway, walkway that is referred to. 'Buffer' is attested in Hiberno-English as (1) 'boxer' (2) 'country-man' (see Slanguage, by Bernard Share, 1997, s.n. Buffer, Buff). 'Buffer' is also attested in English with the meanings 'a foolish person, dolt, fool, buffoon' or 'chap, fellow' (see English Dialect Dictionary). The word 'bodach' is at one with many of the meanings for buffer given here. It is salient to note that another place called Buffers Alley was located near Bunclody (this particular information was provided by Canon Séamas de Vál of Bun Clóidí). (CÓC)
