Explanatory note
- Gaeilge
the field of An Múrach
An Múrach — sloinne (< Moore)Is é an sloinne Sasanach Moore atá san ainm seo agus níl aon bhaint aige leis an sloinne Gaelach Ó Móra (< Ó Mórdha) ná leis an ainmfhocal Béarla moor ‘móin’ (féach http://maps.epa.ie). Ponsonby Moore, as Baile Héil i gcontae Chill Chainnigh, de shliocht na Múrach a raibh an teideal ‘Iarlaí Dhroichead Átha’ acu, a chuir faoi sa bhaile fearainn seo timpeall 1750 (‘Gigginstown’ ag an am) agus a thug ainm dó.
- English
the field of An Múrach
An Múrach — surname (< Moore)This name contains the English surname Moore and is unconnected with the Irish surname Ó Móra (< Ó Mórdha) or the English noun moor “peaty expanse, &c.” (see http://maps.epa.ie). Ponsonby Moore, from Ballyhale in county Kilkenny, of the family of Moores who held the title ‘Earls of Drogheda’, settled in this townland around the year 1750 (then called ‘Gigginstown’) and gave it its new name.
