gort, gart

Explanatory note

  • Gaeilge

    the field of the stacks?

D’fhéadfadh sé freisin gur réadú é 1632 ‘Gortnecroe’ ar Gort na Croiche “the field of the Cross, the gallows” agus go bhfuil baint éigin ag an ainm seo le hainm an bhaile fearainn teorantaigh bf Cross (#28029). Is cosúil go bhfuil an chuid eile den fhianaise ag cur ina choinne sin. Díol spéise na foirmeacha 1655–1669 anseo a chur i gcomparáid le 1639 ‘Ballynecrough’, 1655 ‘Ballanacrogh’, ar réaduithe iad ar bf Baile na Croiche (#55014) (CM 21, 27) (1549 ‘Ballynecroy’, 1668 ‘Ballycroe’, srl.).
