the castle-town of Criofann
Criofann (< Criomhthann) — ainm pearsantaAr na pearsana stairiúla den ainm seo bhí ‘Crimthand mac Énnai Ceinnselaig’, duine de rithe Laighean sa 5ú haois, Corpus Genealogiarum Hiberniae 117a23)
Tá cur síos ar an gcaisleán agus ar an mbábhún san Fhardal Seandálaíochta (www.archaeology.ie).
Is cosúil go raibh an sloinne nó an t-ainm athartha Mac Criofainn le fáil sa chomharsanacht seo — cf. an nóta 1838 ‘belonging … to the Griffins’ anseo agus féach 1601 ‘Terrelagh Mc Criphon’ faoi bf Gort na Lao (#28695) sa pharóiste céanna. Ina ainneoin seo dhealródh sé gurb é an t-ainm pearsanta Criofann atá sa logainm : féach an tagairt dhíreach 1613 ‘Chriffian' Mc. Flynyn [leg. Fynyn] de Castletowne-Chriffin’.
Tá neart samplaí den logainm Baile C(h)aisleáin + cáilitheoir le fáil ar fud na tíre. Féach freisin an nóta ag an Donnabhánach faoi b An Sráidbhaile (La 14, 19) (#1416676) ‘Sráid bhaile, ‘street-town’ (as contradistinguished from ‘castle-town’).’
Cf. b Baile an Chaisleáin, par. Ó Fairchealláin (La 16, 17) (#27819), bf Baile an Chaisleáin, par. na Cille (La 15, 21) (#28783) agus Baile Chaisleáin Ó mBuí, par. Chill Abáin (La 26) (#28844).
