Explanatory note

  • Gaeilge

    the white river meadow

Is deacair srath “river-meadow” a aithint ar sraith “swathe” i logainmneacha uaireanta (féach Ó Crualaoich, Logainmneacha na hÉireann IV s.n. Ballinastraw) agus go deimhin is cosúil go raibh meascán idir an dá théarma in áiteanna. Achar mór talún (beagnach 2000 acra) atá clúdaithe ag an trí bhaile fearainn darb ainm béarlaithe Srah, Srahleagh agus Srahbaun, ar dhá thaobh den sruthán a léirítear ar léarscáileanna ag rith trí lár bf Srahleagh (SO 6ʺ, 25ʺ). B’fhéidir gur dóichí mar sin gurb í an eilimint chéanna atá i dtosach gach ainm díobh .i. srath “river meadow”.

Tá an fhianaise stairiúil measctha i dtaobh fhuaimniú an -th deiridh sa chéad eilimint (nach bhfuil faoi bhéim an ghutha), ach cuir an litriú 1838 ‘Srath bán’ anseo i gcomparáid le 1838 ‘Srath’ (nóta: ‘th is pronounced like ch’) faoi bf An Srath (#28101).
