the pasture of Dearg?
Dearg — ainm pearsanta?Tá éiginnteacht ag baint leis an gcáilitheoir anseo. Is léir gur giorrú é ainm an lae inniu ar an mbunainm fada atá le feiscint in iontrálacha 1549–1660c (déanann 1593/4 agus 1595 aithris ar fhoirm 1576), ach is deacair a bheith cinnte faoin ainm sin féin. Más ainm pearsanta atá sa dara heilimint (faoi mar a mheastar atá i gcás bf Cluain Deirg (#41356) (UF 6)), ní léir cé acu Cluain Deirg Mhaoil “the pasture of bald Dearg” nó Cluain Deirg Maol “the bare Cluain Deirg” ba cheart a thuiscint san ainm fada. Ní fios cé chomh hiontaofa is atá an w- in iontráil 1549. (Toisc go mbíonn cluain le fáil mar ainmfhocal baininscneach i logainmneacha ar uairibh, d'fhéadfaí Cluain Deirg “red pasture” a thuiscint freisin, ina bhfuil an aidiacht bhaininscneach sa logthuiseal.)
D’fhéadfaí an t-ainmfhocal dearg “red cow” agus an aidiacht maol “hornless” a chur san áireamh agus Cluain Deirge Maoile “pasture of the hornless red cow” a léamh (cf. ‘hi rricht bó deirge maíle’ www.dil.ie s.v. 1 mael (c); cf. FGB s.v. 1 dearg “6. f. … (Name for) red cow”), nó a mhalairt de struchtúr, ina bhfuil comhfhocal bunaithe ar an aidiacht dearg agus an t-ainmfhocal maol “hornless cow” .i. Cluain Deargmhaoile “pasture of the red hornless cow” (cf. www.dil.ie s.v. 2 mael (d)).
B’fhéidir fós Cluain Deargmhaol “completely bare pasture” (cf. deargnocht “stark naked”) — féach bf Cluain Maol “bare pasture” i nGaillimh (#21750) agus i gCorcaigh (#9787; #11341).
