Glossary

English (wooded) height; wood; promontory

Explanatory note

  • Gaeilge

    the wood, wooded height

‘Talamh ard (coillteach); coill; ceann tíre’ an réimse bríonna atá leis an bhfocal ros. Tá ardú beag sa talamh taobh leis an mbóthar i dtuaisceart an bhaile fearainn seo.

    Ainmneacha stairiúla:
Ros Chluain Carrach (?) “the wooded height of Cluain Carrach [“rugged pasture”]”, b’fhéidir, an leagan fada den ainm atá le feiscint in iontráil 1557. Maidir le ‘Maurice or Morgh and Dermot O’Dowlyn’ [< Murcha agus Diarmaid Ó Dúllaing] a luaitear leis an mbaile fearainn seo, féach go bhfuil an áit seo suite sa seandúiche Fearann Ó nDúllaing (cf. par An Bhuiríos (#1424)).

Tá tagairtí eile don Cluain Carrach seo le fáil in iontrálacha 1576–1595, a chuireann síos ar gabháltas talún laistiar de bhaile Phort Laoise.
