    the lake of the mist

    Ainmneacha stairiúla:
Níl fágtha ach smut beag den loch in oirdheisceart an bhaile fearainn a thug ainm don áit, ach léiríonn léarscáil www.epa.ie achar mór de thalamh lochach mórthimpeall air sin, agus cuid de sa bhaile fearainn teorantach bf An Ghráinseach Uachtarach lastoir. Sa bhliain 1608 thagadh teorainn thailte an Phiogóidigh an cnoc anuas ‘to a stone in the middle of Loughchoe’ CPR — tá sé le tuiscint gurb é lár an locha féin atá i gceist ansin. Is é ‘Rathbegg’ < An Ráth Bheag “the small ring-fort” an t-ainm a úsáidtear sna gníomhais ar an talamh taobh thiar den loch an uair úd, ach níl aon tuairisc ar aon imfhálú anseo (www.archaeology.ie).

Thuas ar imeall thuaidh an bhaile fearainn tá paiste caol talún ar a dtugtar Site of R.C. Chapel SO 6ʺ. Díol spéise go bhfreagraíonn an suíomh seo do 1608 ‘a cross-cut in the earth, called Crosseretagh’ CPR, de réir dealraimh. Cro(i)s “cross” an t-aicmitheoir is dócha, ach faraor tá cuma thruaillithe ar an gcáilitheoir (leg. ‘Crosserevagh’ < An Chrois Riabhach (?) “the grey, spindled cross”, b’fhéidir — ní dócha gurb é an Réitigh atá ann ar aon nós). Ní léir cé acu an comhtharlúint é seo nó ar chrois í a mharcáil láthair thionóil aifrinn nó teorainn tailte eaglasta. Cf. an cur síos ag an gCorragánach in History and Antiquities of the Diocese of Ossory II 48–50 ar an ngné suntasach ‘Kenny’s Cross’ sa ‘Cross-field’ i bparóiste Achadh Bhó .i. dhá logán éadoimhne gearrtha sa chré ag rith trasna a chéile i ndéanamh croise (bf An Chrois #28029).

Cf. cn Crois Uí Dhuibh/Croshy Duff (#1419165) ar theorainn thiar theas an pharóiste.
