Explanatory note
- Gaeilge
the town of the little cairn
Is ann don sloinne Ó Cearnacháin in Leabhar Mór na nGenealach, ach ní luaitear é leis an gcontae seo. Tá -a- sa chéad siolla den cháilitheoir sa tagairt stairiúil is luaithe dá dtagann anuas chugainn agus i ngach tagairt eile ó lár an 17ú haois amach. Faightear na samplaí go léir a bhfuil -e- sa chéad siolla iontu i ngníomhais talún atá fite fuaite lena chéile: na bailte fearainn ceannann céanna atá i gceist le F 495 (1563) agus le F 971 (1566); déanann Inq. Lag. 25 Jac. I (1624) aithris ar Inq. Lag. 24 Jac. I (1623), a phléann an gabháltas talún céanna a phléitear in F 5924 = F 1624 = F 1376 (bl. 1569). Dá bharr sin is féidir na foirmeacha seo in -e- a rianú siar go dtí 1563 ‘ kernan’ (= 1566 ‘-keran’) agus 1569 ‘-kerote als. -kerane’.
Díol spéise mar sin an litriú 1623 ‘Ballekarnan’ in -a- atá le fáil in aguisín le Inq. Lag. 24 Jac. I (18 Márta 1623): ‘per al’ indentur’ geren’ dat’ 10 dec’ 1623’ “de réir dintiúr eile a cuireadh i bhfeidhm 10 Nollaig 1623”.Is dócha mar sin gur fearr Baile an Charnáin “the town of the small cairn” mar leagan Gaeilge anseo, foirm a réitíonn go maith le hiontráil 1551 agus leis an bhfianaise eile ó 1655 i leith.
Mionainmneacha ar an léarscáil:
Téann Cush Br[idge] SO, Ford SO trasna Cush River < Abhainn na Coise (?) ar theorainn na barúntachta in iarthar an bhaile fearainn.Ainmneacha eile:
Bhailigh Liam Price dhá mhionainm eile anseo (nótaí i seilbh an Bhrainse Logainmneacha), mar atá Cruiteen agus Cruit na Grainne. Cé go bhfuil cnocán maol 123m i lár an bhaile fearainn ní dócha gur cruit “hump” atá sna hainmneacha seo. Is minic a rinne crot-, crit-, cret- de crochta “croft, enclosed field” agus den fhoirm dhíspeagtha croichtín sa chontae seo agus i gContae Chill Chainnigh, e.g. Crettyard < Crochta Ard (#28864); 1601 ‘Crottintegill’ < 1563 ‘Croughtentegle’ < Crochta an tSeagail (#28815); 1691 ‘Crotonclogh’ < 1618 ‘Croghtniclogh’ < Crochta na gCloch (#26574) (CC 6). I dtuaisceart Chontae Chill Dara cuir i gcás 1654 ‘a Croft called Crotti Clonteig’ CS faoi bf Corr na Muclach (#25563) (CD 3) i dtuaisceart Chontae Chill Dara agus cf. 1654 ‘Crottiforis’ CS < Crochta Feorais “the croft of Feoras (~ Piers)”, 1654 ‘Crotty Nycholas’ CS < Crochta Niocláis “the croft of Nioclás (< Nicholas)”, srl., sa cheantar céanna; tugann FitzGerald 1766 ‘Cretteennafahans’ agus 1817 ‘Crotnefoy’ i Ráth Iomgháin in JKAS VII 277. An Croichtín “the little croft” agus Crochta na Gréine (?) “the croft of the sun” na mionainmneacha atá i gceist, b’fhéidir. Féach leis an nóta faoi bf Bearna na gCrochtaí (#41796) (UF 46) in Dinnseanchas VI 149–50.
