Explanatory note

  • Gaeilge

    the town(land) of An Hórsaíoch
An Hórsaíoch — ón sloinne Angla-Normannach de Horseye

Tá tagairtí don sloinne Angla-Normannach de Horseye le fáil in Éirinn chomh luath leis an 13ú haois, ar a laghad: i lár na haoise sin ainmníodh ‘John de Horseye’ mar bhall de ghiúiré a shuigh ag Caisleán Caoimhín, tuairim is 16 km slí ó dheas ó Baile an Hórsaígh féin (Alen's Reg., lch. 110; féach fosta L. Price (1967) The Place-Names of Co. Wicklow, lch. 387). Sampla maith é seo d'ainm baile fearainn a dtugann an fhianaise stairiúil lonnú Angla-Normannach le tuiscint, ar an gcéad dul síos, agus athghaelú (ó thaobh teanga de) ina dhiaidh.

  • English

    the town(land) of An Hórsaíoch
An Hórsaíoch — from the Anglo-Norman surname de Horseye

The Anglo-Norman surnam de Horseye is attested in Ireland at least as early as the 13th century, when we find ‘John de Horseye’ named as a member of a jury that sat at Castlekevin, some 16 km to the south of Ballyhorsey (Alen's Reg. p. 110; see also L. Price (1967), The Place-Names of Co. Wicklow, p. 387). This is a good example of a townland name whose evidence reflects initial Anglo-Norman settlement followed by (linguistic) re-gaelicization.
