Loughan Lease, Loughan a leis, which means the Lake of Cures
"In the south eastern boundary of this townland is a small lake called Loughan Lease, Loughan a leis, which means the Lake of Cures, famous for the quality of its mud in Scorbulic Diseases. Many people have come from different places for the mud of this lake to cure scurvy which is affirmed never fails, but 'tis said it has failed of late years in consequence of a pack of mangy hounds having been washed there."
