Garbhag
... the river rising in Lough Gill, flowing through Sligo Town, and emptying itself into the ocean. We are informed however, that the river is fordable on that part between the Town of Sligo and the sea. It is called by some the Sligo River. In Irish it is called Garbhag, and in English very often Gitley, a name given it, the people say, from having its source in Lough Gill (67-68).

The River Sligo ... Garbhog
'The River Sligo is not remarkable for shells, if we credit the inhabitants, who say they never saw shell in it, ant that town takes it name Sligeach not from the river being shelly, or called Sligeach by reason thereof, for they never called it Sligo River (it always goes by the name of Garbhog in Irish, and Giltly in English) but by reaon of cart loads of shells having been found underground in may places with the town, where houses stand now. ... The signification it (the town) bears among the people is, the Place of Shells. 137
