English mountain, moor

Explanatory note

  • Gaeilge

    Ní léir a bhrí.

Téann an fhianaise Ghaeilge i bhfad siar, m.sh. 700c ‘o Sleibtiu’, 800c ‘Slebti’, ‘i Sleibti’, agus níl aon dabht faoi fhoirm cheart an logainm seo. É sin ráite, ní foirm iolra den fhocal sliabh “mountain” atá ann: s-thamhan ab ea an slíab sin sa tSean-Ghaeilge, slébe (.i. sléibhe) san iolra (féach www.dil.ie s.v. slíab). Thuairimigh T.F. O’Rahilly gur foirm uatha le foirceann atá sa logainm Sléibhte: ‘what the suffix is I cannot say … In Middle Irish slébte replaces O. Ir. slébe as plural of sliab (Already slebte, gen.pl., in LU 4022). Strachan has suggested that the new plural “is probably due to association with glenn and fán”; but it is more likely that the existence of O. Ir. slébte, sg., with collective (?) force, was responsible for the innovation’ Ériu 13 (1942) 137–8.

Taispeánann an fhianaise traslitrithe 1197 ‘Slefta’, 1204 ‘Sleb[t]e’ rian den -bh- láir caol /βʹ/, /vʹ/. Rinneadh guta den chonsan áirithe seo i gcanúintí an deiscirt, áfach, agus tá fuaimniú an lae inniu le sonrú ar 1549 ‘Maydeslietye’ < Maide Sléibhte “the (crossing-)stick of Sléibhte” (ag tagairt don Ford SO nó do Sleaty Bridge SO, is dócha). Tá iarracht den ársaíocht nó den choimeádachas ag roinnt le litriú 1466 ‘Slebte’, is cosúil (sna Papal Letters atá sé sin le fáil, an foinse céanna arbh as 1204 ‘Sleb[t]e’ thuas); is é is dóichí ná go raibh an t-athrú fuaime seanbhunaithe faoin tráth sin.
