the island of the pouches
The word peasán has several meanings. As regards the anglicized name, Illaunanbissan is the official spelling as laid down in the ‘Townland Index’ to the 1861 Census, confirming what had been engraved on the Ordnance Survey six-inch map in 1838. This was an engraver's error for Illaunnabissan
