    town of (the) plain?

Mheas Seosamh Laoide agus Ó Corragáin gur ghiorrú é Baile Mhaí ar sheanainm fada Baile Mhaí Móire “the town of Maigh Mhór [(the) big plain]” agus gurb in an chúis go raibh séimhiú ar thúschonsan an cháilitheora (féach ‘Baile Mhuighe Móire’, Post-sheanchas; 1905 ‘Baile-Mhaighe-Mhóir … Irish speakers in Co. Kilkenny call it Bollia-wee’, History and Antiquities of the Diocese of Ossory II 181). Ach féach nach bhfuil na foirmeacha stairiúla seo in -more le fáil ach i gcáipéisí 1655–1666. Thairis sin, tá sé le tuiscint as na foirmeacha 1666 ‘Ballymoymore’, ‘Ballymoybegg’ in Acts of Settlement and Explanation, gurb amhlaidh gur foranna den bhunainm 1566 ‘Ballewoyve’, 1582 ‘Ballimoy’, atá á chur in iúl le mór agus beag anseo.

D’fhéadfaí Baile an Mhaí a chur san áireamh mar mhíniú ar an séimhiú seo. Mar is dual d’fhocal a bhí neodrach sa tSean-Ghaeilge (www.dil.ie s.v. mag) tá meascán de magh (fir.) agus magh (bain.) (is coitianta sa logthuiseal maigh) le fáil i logainmneacha, cé gur comónta i bhfad an leagan baininscneach de. Is sa tuaisceart is mó a fhaightear magh (fir.), m.sh. bbf An Magh (Ca; Do; Li; ; ; Mu), ach féach sa deisceart samplaí ar nós bf Magh Glas (#24714) (Ci), bf Bun an Mhaí (#32388) (Lm), bf Áth an Mhaí (#46779) (), bf Cluain an Mhaí (#6191) (Cl). Tá cuma bhaininscneach ar an bhfocal in oirdheisceart Chontae Laoise sa logainm bf Maigh Fhada (#27979) (La 25, 31).

Tá talamh íseal leibhéalta ag síneadh siar 5km ón mbaile fearainn seo ar gach taobh den Fheoir.

Téann an t-ainm Béarla siar go dtí lár an 17ú haois nuair a phós Iarla Mhaighean Rátha bean dar sloinne Rush (cf. History and Antiquities of the Diocese of Ossory II 183).
