Explanatory note

  • Gaeilge

    crooked pasture

Ní léir an ionann é seo agus an eaglais darb ainm Camchluain a bhí ‘suite i ndeoise Osraí i gCúige Laighean’ de réir Mhic Colgáin in Acta Sanctorum Hiberniæ (1645). Is minic láthair eaglasta mar a bhfuil an eilimint cluain (féach Ó Cearbhaill, Logainmneacha na hÉireann III).

An cuimilteach neamhghlórach ch- /x-/ a theacht i ndiaidh an -m déliopaigh (gan ghuta cúnta eatarthu, m.sh. mar atá in camchuairt /ˈkaməˌxuərtʹ/ i nGaeilge na Mumhan) is cúis leis an athrú ó /-mxl-/ go /-mpl-/ le /p/ pléascach neamhghlórach sa bhéarlú (e.g. 1666 ‘Camplone’) — tá an t-ionad urlabhraíochta céanna ag /m/ is ag /p/ (cf. bf Camchoill (#27817)).
