coill, coillidh, coillte, coille
English wood

Explanatory note

  • Gaeilge

    the wood of Coitín?
the wood of the little cot-boat?

Ní léir cé acu sloinne (Coitín < Cotyn na nAngla-Normannach?) nó ainmfhocal coitianta (coitín, díspeag. < coite “small boat”?) atá sa cháilitheoir anseo.

Níl aon iarsmaí eaglasta ar an mbaile fearainn seo agus measaimid gur fearr cloí le coill seachas cill (féach an Fardal Seandálaíochta, www.archaeology.ie).

Cf. bf An Choill Bheag (#28710) atá teorantach leis seo lastuaidh.

Kilcotton represents the Irish Cill-Catain, that is, the Church of St Catan or Caddan.
Kilcotton represents the Irish Cill-Catain, that is, the Church of St Catan or Caddan. ... There is no church-site in Kilcotton, nor is there any tradition that such was ever here. From this it may be safely concluded that Kylebeg & Kilcotton, which adjoin, are but subdivisions of one and the same original townland, and that the church of Kylebeg was the ancient church dedicated to St. Catan.' [Dhá bf ar leith is ea Kilcotton & Kilbeg ón tagairt is luaithe dóibh, bliain 1624.]
