Explanatory note

  • Gaeilge

    the house of the animal-enclosure

Tagann foirmeacha Gaeilge anuas chugainn ó dheireadh an 16ú haois, e.g. 1600c ‘A ttigh an tuair’ (féach Nic Dhonnchadha ‘The Medical School of Aghmacart’ in Ossory, Laois and Leinster 2 (2006) le haghaidh tuilleadh eolais faoin bhfoinse seo). Taispeánann na leaganacha béarlaithe comhaimsearthacha 1566 ‘Tantoure’ agus 1601 ‘Tenture’ go raibh an -gh balbh i ndeireadh an fhocail tigh an uair úd, faoi mar a bhí in 1838 ‘tin túigh’ (recte túizh). Tá r-caol suntasach Osraí /ʒ/ le sonrú sa litriú seo (féach nóta faoi par Achadh Bhó (#1412)).

Cf. bf Tigh an Tuair i mbarúntacht theorantach Ghabhalmhaí laisteas (#27482) (CC 9).

    Mionainmneacha ar an léarscáil:
Féach Eglish Church (in ruins) SO i ndeisceart an bhaile fearainn: Teampall (San) Niocóil “the church of Saint Nicholas” an fhoirm atá le tuiscint as na tagairtí ón 16ú haois ‘Templenicholl’ agus ‘Capellania S. Nicholai’ a luann Ó Corragáin in History and Antiquities of the Diocese of Ossory II 66 — ní léir cén t-údarás atá aige nuair a deir ‘it was formerly known as Eglish-Nichole’. Cf. Eglish Friary SO, bf Mion Droichid (#27810).
