Explanatory note

  • Gaeilge

    the wood of Maolruanaidh
    Maolruanaidh — ainm pearsanta

Níl aon iarsmaí eaglasta sa bhaile fearainn seo a thabharfadh orainn cill “church” a chur san áireamh mar aicmitheoir, ná níl aon naoimh den ainm Maolruanaidh le fáil sna ginealaigh. Maidir leis an gcáilitheoir, féach an /l/ a bheith báite roimh /r/ faoin mbliain 1628 ‘Killmaronny’ ar a dhéanaí (agus b’fhéidir chomh luath le lár an 16ú haois, más féidir iontaoibh a thabhairt leis na foirmeacha gaolmhara 1563 ‘Kylmarone’ = 1601 ‘Kilmarone = 1612 ‘Killmarone’). Cf. 1719 ‘Knockvaroone’, 1733 ‘Knockmullroon’ faoi cn Cnoc Mhaolruain (#1381454) i mBaile Átha Cliath.

    Mionainmneacha ar an léarscáil:
Tá cur síos ar The Mound SO san Fhardal Seandálaíochta (‘Castle — motte and bailey’, www.archaeology.ie).

    Ainmneacha stairiúla:
Is cosúil gur don mhóta úd a thagraíonn an mionainm 1549 ‘Boer edrigen’, 1549 ‘Crot Borrnedamgin’ < Bóthar an Daingin “the road of the fort”. Is minic a bhéarlaítear bóthar le Boer-, Bore- sa chontae seo i gcáipéisí an 16ú haois. (Ach cf. bf Bóthar na Saor (#28880) i gCill Uisean.)
