the grey, striped plain?
Tá éiginnteacht áirithe ag baint leis an aicmitheoir anseo, agus ar an drochuair ní thagann aon fhianaise anuas chugainn atá níos sine ná an 19ú haois. Is é is dóichí ná gur machaire “plain” atá sa chéad eilimint agus gur haplógú (haplology) is cúis leis an bhfuaimniú tríshiollach 1816 ‘Maghareagh’ (.i. simpliú -r-r- > -r-). Ní dócha gur gá dul i muinín leis an eilimint neamhchomónta macha “cattle-field, -yard” sa chás seo.
Cf. bf An Seanmhachaire (#28006).
