Explanatory note

  • Gaeilge

    pasture of the Leinstermen

Ní heol dúinn aon sampla níos sine ná 1824 ‘Clonlyon’. Tá an baile fearainn seo suite ar imeall Chontae Uíbh Fhailí an lae inniu, ar an tseanteorainn idir Uí Riagáin i gCúige Laighean agus Tuath Ghéisille i gCúige na Mí (cf. Ó hUidhrín 1400c ‘Do ghabh Tuath Ghéisille gheal / taoiseach do leathbhord Laighean’; féach suíomh 1563c ‘Tovogeishel’ Cotton Map díreach taobh thuaidh d’Uí Riagáin).

Cf. c. 807AD ‘hi Cloin Lagen’, tagairt luath Ghaeilge do bf Cluain Laighean/ Clonlyon (#37929) ar theorainn Chontae na Mí le Contae Chill Dara .i. an teorainn idir na seandúichí Breá (< Breagha) i gCúige na Mí agus Uí Fhaoláin i gCúige Laighean.

Ar a dhéanaí is atá an fhianaise, d’fhéadfaí an t-ainm pearsanta Laighneach a chur san áireamh, m.sh. Cluain Laighnigh, agus a thuairimiú gur thit an guta deiridh i léig. Cf. 1571 ‘Pardon to Tirrelagh O’Dun mac Moriertagh, of Garryhudert [.i. bf Garraí Hoidir (#28376) laisteas], in the country of O’Dun, gent., Dermot and Lenaghe, his sons, and Dermot mac Moroghe O’Dun, his servant’.

    Mionainmneacha ar an léarscáil:

    1. Derry Bog SO < Doire “(oak-)wood” is ainm don phortach in oirthear an bhaile fearainn (cf. 1824 ‘Bogaderry’ [léigh ‘Bog of Derry’?] TAB), mar a bhfuil Derries Hill SO 6ʺ (cf. 1824 ‘Derries’ TAB).
    2. Tá sruthán (gan ainm SO) ar theorainn thuaidh na barúntachta anseo ar a dtugtar 1655 ‘Glashinahorna’ ar an Down Survey agus 1659 ‘Glasscanahoarna’ in CS X 24 — ach trí thimpiste, de réir gach dealraimh: sin é seanainm Glashagh Water SO (féach faoi bf An Chois Íochtarach/Uachtarach (#28402, #28403)) ar theorainn thoir thuaidh na barúntachta.
