Explanatory note

  • Gaeilge

the corner, nook of the son of Conamhail
Conamhail — ainm pearsanta de chuid na Laighean

Tháinig athrú mór ar an logainm seo thar na blianta agus níl a bhunfhoirm Ghaeilge soiléir. Tagann dhá thagairt Ghaeilge anuas chugainn as Láimhscríbhinn Uí Dhuinn .i. 1595 ‘Cuilic an Abhall’ agus 1608 ‘culic an abhaill’, ach más ea, is léir gur litriú foghrúil de shaghas éigin atá ann. Féach na foirmeacha béarlaithe neamhspleácha seo a leanas, mar shampla, a thaispeánann v- tar éis an chéad mhír: 1607/8 ‘Coillvickanowall’, 1629 ‘Collevicknowell’, 1638 ‘Coolevecknowell’.

Réiteodh cuid mhaith den fhianaise eile le *Cúil Leic an Abhaill “the corner, nook of the flagstone of the apple” (cf. bf Cúil Leic na Liath (#21896) i nGaillimh); cf. www.dil.ie s.v. uball, ubull (firinscneach); cf. aball (baininscneach). Ach níl aon talamh leacach sa bhaile fearainn, cé go bhfuil paiste beag de thalamh chlochach ghairbhéalach ann (féach ‘Ren[d]zinas/Lithosols’, www.epa.ie).

Is éard atá sa cháilitheoir, dar linne, ná an t-ainm pearsanta Conamhail atá le fáil i measc ghinealaigh Laighean in Corpus Genealogiarum Hiberniae agus i Leabhar Mór na nGenealach (Conamail, gin. Conamla). Is cosúil gur fhorbair an ginideach mar seo a leanas sa logainm, Conamhla > Conamhal, nó neachtar acu gur thit an guta deiridh i léig nuair a ligeadh bunús an ainm i ndearmhad.

Pé ar domhan de, tá an fhorbairt ó 1718 ‘Coolickenowell’ go 1765 ‘Knockanowl’ de bharr comhshamhlú -l-n-l > -n-n-l sa Bhéarla spéisiúil ann féin. Sin nó cuireadh an eilimint comónta cnoc chun tosaigh trí ionadaíocht. Léirítear an mionainm Coolknowet [sic] SO 6″ díreach taobh thoir den teampall in bf Raoire Mór (#28636) lastuaidh — is cosúil gur iarsma é sin de mhalairt foirme béarlaithe (leg. Coolknowel).

    Ainmneacha stairiúla:
Achadh na gCros (?) “the field of the crosses”, is dócha, an t-ainm eile atá le feiscint i bhfianaise an 17ú haois: 1608/9 ‘Aghanecrosse … acha na cros’ [leg. acha na ccros?], 1638 ‘Aghenegrosse and Cooleveckenavell’ LS Uí Dhuinn 178 agus tá cuma an ghinidigh uatha ar leagan béarlaithe Thaidhg Uí Dhuinn 1607/8 ‘Achanacrossie’ < Achadh na Croise “the field of the cross” agus ar 1638 ‘Aghenecrossy’ atá le fáil in aon ghníomhas le ‘Aghenegrosse’! Cf. malartú uatha is iolra faoi bf Baile na Log (#28672). Tá tobar beannaithe agus ballán (St. Fionan’s Wells SO) suite díreach in aice leis an mbaile fearainn seo in bf Raoire Mór (#28636), tamaillín laisteas den teampall thuasluaite. B’fhéidir freisin go raibh baint ag an ainm leis na trí chrosleaca a luaitear san Fhardal Seandálaíochta faoi bf Ros Fhionnghlaise (#28645) (‘Three Early Christian cross-slabs … Originally located in Rearymore church … Now in the sacristy of the R.C. church in Rosenallis’ www.archaeology.ie).
