ceapach, ceapaigh
English plot of land, tillage plot

Explanatory note

  • Gaeilge

    tillage-plot of (the) block, boulder?

Murab ionann is bf An Cheapach Bheag (#28545), níl aon rian de -ch /-x/ deiridh an aicmitheora le sonrú san fhianaise. Cloítear le foirm an ainmnigh ceapach ina ainneoin sin (cf. bf An Cheapach Ard (#28342)).

Tá an dara heilimint doiléir.

Is cosúil gur cheart na foirmeacha luatha a léamh mar seo a leanas: 1569 ‘Cap-ellan’, 1582 ‘Cap-ollan’, 1601 ‘Keappa ullane’, 1607 ‘Capp-illane’, 1607 ‘Capp-ollane’, ‘Capp-ullan’, 1659 ‘Cap-olane’. Is fiú iad seo a chur i gcomparáid le hainm stairiúil a thagair d’áit timpeall le bf An Goirtínbf Míleac, tamaillín ó thuaidh .i. 1607 ‘Garrifoolane’, 1622 ‘Garrefelan’ CPR, 1639 ‘Garryfelan’, 1660c ‘Garrifollan’ BSD, 1662 ‘Garryfellan’ Inq. Lag. < Garraí Faoláin (?) “the garden of Faolán (ainm pearsanta)”, ina bhfeicimid -oo-, -e-, -o- mar réaduithe ar -ao- na Gaeilge idir dhá chonsan leathana. D’fhéadfaí an cáilitheoir céanna a thuairimiú anseo, agus an túschonsan f- faoi shéimhiú i ndiaidh ceapach/ceapaigh (bain.) .i. Ceapach Fhaoláin (?) “the tillage-plot of Faolán”. Cf. an litriú -o- in 1739 ‘Ballifolan’ faoi bf Baile Uí Fhaoláin/Ballyfolan (#54859) i gCill Mhantáin (agus an litriú -u- in 1643 ‘Morrow O’ffulane’ Dep. 1641 sa chontae céanna úd), agus cf. 1601 ‘Tullalane’, 1615 ‘Tullelane’, 1626 ‘Tulliellane’ < bf Tulaigh Fhaoláin (#8233) i gCorcaigh.

Bheifí ag súil le rian éigin den fhréamhchonsan f- /f/, áfach, tharla go dtagann a oiread sin tagairtí anuas chugainn. Bhí seisear dar sloinne Whelan sa bharúntacht seo agus M‘Phelan amháin i gCluain na Slí in aimsir Griff. Val.

Maidir le ulán, cf. na mionainmneacha Gaeltachta cn Cnoc na nUlán (#1395150) i Múscraí agus mng An tUlán Liath (#1398992) in Inis Meáin; ní léir a leithéid de chloch shuntasach anseo.

    Ainmneacha stairiúla:
Ní léir bunús 1607 ‘Kinnaghan’, ‘Kinaghan’, mionainm a luaitear i dteannta leis an mbaile fearainn seo in LS Uí Dhuinn 22.
