Explanatory note

  • Gaeilge

the wood of the green field?

‘Tulach’, ‘cnocán’ a bhíonn i gceist le mullán de ghnáth ach is minic a bhuailtear leis i logainmneacha Chúige Laighean agus gan de bhrí aige, is cosúil, ach ‘gort’ nó ‘páirc’. Féach nóta an Donnabhánaigh anseo, 1838 ‘Mullán is often any green field’.

Féach inter alia na nótaí seo a leanas as na hAinmleabhair. Ó Donnabháin arís in 1839: ‘na mulláin “the green fields” … is the local interpretation though mullán … should mean gentle elevation, the top of gently sloping ground’ faoi bf Mullans (CM 15) (#54930), agus in 1840: ‘Mullán “a green field” — this is the local meaning’ faoi bf An Mullán (LG 26) (#52421). Féach leis Tomás Ó Conchúir in 1839: ‘mullan na sgeach “field of the briars” — mullán has a peculiar meaning here’ faoi bf Mullán na Sceach (Ce 24) (#3602).
