"It is about a mile & a quarter in length, and was cut to facilitate the passage of vessels to the town, without attempting to go up the river against the current, which is rapid, to the town. It runs from one part to the other of a curve which the river forms about that place. It has 1 stone & another wooden bridge over it, and one lock. It belongs to the Canal Company." [Desc. Rem.];
