the mountain recess, hollow of Ó Duibh
Ó Duibh — sloinne, is cosúilCummeenduff Glen atá i gcló ar léarscail sé orlaigh an cheantair, in ionad an ainm áitiúil ‘The Black Valley’. I dtaobh an ainm bhunaidh de, tá cuid den eolas a bailíodh san Ainmleabhar (1841) ag teacht le Com Uí Dhuibh: Loughcomheeduf (‘local’), Ui Duibh (scríofa le peann luaidhe), Loch Cúm Uí Duibh (i bpeann luaidhe). Cuimín Dubh, ‘black hollow’, a scríobh Seán Ó Donnabhain ina dhiaidh sin agus an nota seo leanas aige ar an ainm, ‘I cannot believe but this is wrong’ [ag tagairt do Comheeduff]. Thug sé le fios go raibh Cuimín Dubh in úsáid i gceantar Chill Airne, ‘and understood to mean “the dark commeen or glen”’.
Ba é an Donnabhánach a shocraigh go ngreanfaí Cummeenduff ar an léarscáil sé orlaigh. Measaimid gur athmhíniú atá sa leagan seo *Coimín Dubh aige agus gur Com Uí Dhuibh an ‘lectio difficilor’ agus an leagan bunaidh. Nuair a ceadaíodh an t-ábhar stairiúil i gClárlann na nGniomhas, ba é an leagan den logainm a fuarthas ansin ná Cumiduff (bl. 1747 agus 1756) .i. Com Uí Dhuibh.
