the town of An Míoch
An Míoch (< Midheach < Midech) — sloinne, is dócha, sa chás seo.
Is sean-ainmfhocal é mide a chiallaigh ‘middle, centre’ agus a d’imigh as feidhm go luath. Tá an focal caomhnaithe in ainm an chúige stairiúil agus in ainm an chontae ina dhiaidh sin (.i. An Mhí). Chiallaigh midech mar ainmfhocal firinscneach ‘a man of Meath’ agus mar ainmfhocal bainscineach ‘a woman of Meath’. Rinneadh sloinne de ina dhiaidh sin agus tá foirmeacha ar nós de Midia, Miadh, srl., le fáil i gcáipéisí Laidine nó Béarla (c.f. ainm Béarla an bhaile fearainn) - English
the town of An Míoch
An Míoch (< Midheach < Midech) — probably a surname in this context.
The noun mide meaning ‘middle, centre’ fell out of use at an early period. The word has been preserved as An Mhí, the name of the historical province and modern county (i.e., Meath). As a masculine noun, midech meant ‘a man of Meath’, and as a feminine noun ‘a woman of Meath’. This was later made into a surname, and forms such as de Midia, Miadh, etc., are found in English and Latin documents (c.f. the English name of the townland)
