I consulted two sensible men, Mitchell and Laverty, of the one race and the other, for the names of the townlands in that neighbourhood, but they could do nothing more than give the present pronunciation, as the old language is no longer understood in the Lagan. They say that the extent of the territory called the Lagan is not at all defined, some confining it to one parish, others making it extend from Lifford to Letterkenny and a third party insisting that you are in the Lagan as soon as you pass the gap. It seems to me that what the peasantry now call the Lagan is the very territory anciently called Moy-Itha and afterwards Tir-Enna and I think that the parish of Raymoaghy is Ráth-Mugha-Itha, as there is no evididence that Mo-Eochy-beo was the patron of it. The Lagan means "the low country" and is the very fattest and best part of the Barony of Raphoe. It is impossible to get the country people to agree upon the extent of any of these local territories, some making them too small, others too large. LSO 150 (OD)
