Explanatory note
- Gaeilge
Is léir ón fhianaise gur logainm measartha nua-aimseartha é Windy Arbour: is san 18ú haois a thagann sé i gcomharbacht ar an logainm béarlaithe ‘Glassons’. Tá ‘Glassons’ le díorthú ó Na Glasáin, de réir dealraimh; tá an t-aistriúchán ‘Greenland’ le fáil san fhianaise freisin, rud a thugann le tuiscint go raibh Na Glasáin ag tagairt do bhánta glasa nó a leithéid.
Tá an chuma air gur fhorbair Windy Arbour ó ‘Windy Harbour’ “a sheltered place from the wind” mar atá an logainm seo fianaithe sa Bhéarla (cf. Coldharbour i gCill Chainnigh, Coolharbour i gCill Mhantáin agus i Loch Garman, srl.; tá Coldharbour coitianta mar ainm páirce i Sasana freisin). Ach, is díol spéise é go mbíodh an bhrí “a grass plot, lawn, garden” ag arbour sa Bhéarla, tráth, agus mar sin, ní féidir a chur as an áireamh gur aistriúchán de glasán é an mhír Arbour sa chás seo. - English
It is clear from the evidence compiled by the Placenames Branch that Windy Arbour is a relatively modern name, having replaced the anglicised placename ‘Glassons’ in the 18th century. ‘Glassons’ appears to be derived from Na Glasáin; the translation ‘Greenland’ is also found in the evidence, implying that Na Glasáin referred to green lea-fields or the like.
Windy Arbour seems to be a development from ‘Windy Harbour’ (“a place sheltered from the wind”): harbour is attested in English-language placenames (cf. Coldharbour in Kilkenny, Coolharbour in Wicklow and Wexford, etc.; Coldharbour is also common in England as a fieldname). However, it is interesting to note that the word arbour once had the meaning “grass plot, lawn, garden” in English; it cannot be ruled out that arbour is a translation of Irish glasán in this case.
