Explanatory note

  • Gaeilge

Ní léir brí an ainm. Is mar fionn + achadh a thuigtear an dara heilimint sa chaint agus sa leagan a socraíodh mar ainm an bhaile phoist (1969). Is cosúil nach é seo an bhunfhoirm, áfach. B'fhéidir gur ainm treibhe a bhí i gceist ó cheart: féach Mac an Bhaird, AINM V (1991-1993)

  • English

Meaning unclear. The second element of the spoken form of the name (and the official Irish form as decided in 1969) is commonly interpreted to be a compound of fionn, 'white, fair, &c.' + achadh, 'field'. However, this does not appear to have been the historical form, and it may originally have been a tribal name: see Mac an Bhaird, AINM V (1991-1993)
