Explanatory note
- Gaeilge
(island of the) green covering
Oileán carraigeach le haillte ar gach taobh de is ea é seo. Tá barr an oileáin réasúnta réidh, agus tá brat glas féir ar a mhullach. Measaimid gurb é atá san ainm ná comhfhocal a chuimsíonn an aidiacht glas “of green or greenish hue”, (DIL) agus an t-ainmfhocal éide (étiud, éted sa tSean-Ghaeilge) “raiment, covering, garment” (DIL) agus gur ag tagairt don bhrat glas seo atá ar bharr an oileáin atá sé. - English
(island of the) green covering
This is a rocky island with cliffs on all sides. The top of the island is fairly flat and covered with grass. It seems likely that the name contains a compound of the adjective glas “of green or greenish hue”, (DIL) and the noun éide (étiud, éted in the older language) “raiment, covering, garment” (DIL), and that this refers to the grass covering on top of the island.
